Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez, Guadalajara’s world boxing champion, joined President Claudia Sheinbaum last week to announce the largest boxing class in the world set to take place on April 6, 2025, within the framework of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.
As well as the huge Zocalo in Mexico City, boxing classes will also be held at the same time in plazas in towns and cities across the nation.
Sheinbaum said her government wants to promote boxing as a discipline that carries a message of peace. She held a similar event when she served as mayor of Mexico City between 2018 and 2023.
Sheinbaum hailed Álvarez as not only a great champion, but a man with “many values that he transmits not only to his family but to all the people of Mexico.”
