American Society creeps slowly into new year

The next Thursday lunch at the American Society (Amsoc) won’t be until January 11.

On that day, however, patrons can enjoy an “old-fashioned” comfort meal, featuring a hearty chicken noodle soup, a big, fresh salad bar and a grilled cheese sandwich on the side, with chocolate brownies for dessert.

The next English Book Club Meeting will be on Thursday, January 18, 10 a.m. Discussion will center on “The Sorrow of War” by Bao Ninh (1996). In 1966, as a 17-year-old, Ninh was sent south in a North Vietnamese Army youth brigade. Of the 500 men who went to war with the brigade, he is one of only ten who survived. In this autobiography, he powerfully describes his experience as a survivor.
