May holidays and festivities

While May 10, Día de las Madres, is not an official Mexican holiday it ranks of one of the country’s most widely celebrated occasions. The rest of this month is riddled with other special dates.

May 1: Dia del Trabajo (Labor Day), an official non-working holiday, marked with worker marches.

May 3: Día de la Cruz (Day of the Holy Cross), construction workers party and shoot off sky rockets at building sites, village processions, altar displays.

May 5: Cinco de Mayo (Commemoration of the Battle of Puebla, 1862), noted for civic ceremonies.  A big day for Latinos in the United States, less so south of the border.

May 6: Señor del Guaje fiesta, a religious celebration in Jocotepec.

May 15: Día del Maestro (Teacher’s Day), during which most schools close and throw parties for academic staff.

May 23: Día del Estudiante (Student’s Day), a day-off from classes and fun for middle and high school students.
