Transgender clinic opens at public hospital

The Hospital General de Occidente (HGO) in Zapopan will become the first health center of its kind in Mexico to open a specialist unit to exclusively attend to transgender persons.

Raúl Villarroel Cruz, chief of the hospital’s Unidad Médica Sexual, said personnel who will staff the unit are completing training to be able to attend to persons seeking sex reassignment surgery.

The unit will offer a range of other services to transgender persons, including endocrinology, gynecology, urology and laboratory analysis.

Villarroel made the announcement prior to a major conference, the Congreso Estatal sobre Género y Diversidad Sexo Genérica, that is being held at the HGO on July 25 and 26.  Attendees will include staff from public and private health organizations, as a well as representatives from municipal and state offices.
