Zona federal defenders protest in Guadalajara

Inhabitants of Ajijic, San Antonio, San Juan Cosalá and other lakeshore communities have joined forces to take their grievances concerning invasions of federal land bordering Lake Chapala directly to authorities at the regional headquarters of the National Water Commission (Conagua), the federal agency in charge of oversight of the areas in dispute.

pg11aOn Thursday, August 26, the protestors marched from downtown Guadalajara’s Parque Revolución to the Conagua office on Calzada de Federalismo, carrying  banners and signs emblazoned with slogans calling for liberation of zona federal property that has been blocked by private parties.

Arriving at entrance to the Conagua facility, local activist Alicia Córdova read out a petition demanding that the agency intervene to free shoreline beaches and impose sanctions on persons who have abused the zona federal concessions they were granted for agricultural and fishing activities.

“During the last 30 years, the lakeshore people have been affected by the invasion of the federal areas adjacent to Lake Chapala, due to the lack of observance, inspection and vigilance, as well as the omission of forceful actions by Conagua,” she declared.
