FIFA announces Guadalajara’s 2026 World Cup schedule

The official calendar for the 2026 World Cup, to be hosted jointly by the United States, Mexico and Canada, was revealed this week, with Guadalajara’s Akron Stadium set to host four first-round games.

pg6cThe announcement by FIFA, world soccer’s governing body, set the dates and venues for all the games in the competition, which will feature 48 nations in 2026, up from 32 in recent years.

Held every four years, the World Cup is the most-watched sporting event on the planet.

Guadalajara has hosted games in the two previous competitions held in Mexico, in 1970 and 1986.

The Akron Stadium, inaugurated in 2013 and home to the Chivas soccer team, was chosen over the slightly larger Estadio Jalisco, which was built in 1968 and needs major updating.
