Mayor hands out new outfits to Chapala cops

Chapala Mayor Joaquin Huerta presided at a brief ceremony Wednesday, June 25 to distribute new uniforms to all 107 men and women who serve on the local police force.

Each officer received a pair of heavy duty boots, uniform over-shirt and pants.

Huerta remarked that this was the fourth police uniform hand-out since he entered office in 2012 and found officers dressed in tatters. The first and latest of the clothing lots were purchased by the municipal government. On two other occasions outfits were provided by the state.

The mayor also mentioned that he is still actively engaged in a parley with state officials to establish Chapala as regional headquarters for the Fuerza Unica (tactical police unit) that is scheduled to step into action in August or September.  The small base set up at the outskirts of Ajijic as a temporary camp for the Mexican Army is available for use as a command post.

The state has picked 19 of Chapala’s most qualified officers to serve in the Fuerza Unica. Other officers will come from Jocotepec, Tuxcueca and Poncitlán. The selected officers have already  have completed the initial screening and training process.
