Former Chapala Mayor Gerardo Degollado – brother of the sitting presidente municipal – has reappeared on the local political scene in the early wind-up to the 2018 election cycle.
Last week, Degollado submitted his formal resignation from the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), revealing that he has jumped on the bandwagon to support left-wing firebrand Andrés Manuel López Obrador as the Movimiento de Renovación Nacional (Morena) presidential candidate.
Degollado served as mayor in the 2007-2009 term. He lost a second bid for the post in 2012. His defection to Morena has fueled rumors that he may seek the party’s nomination for the Chapala mayor’s seat, raising the remote possibility of a brother-versus-brother race should his elder sibling Javier stand for reelection under the PRI banner.
For the moment, both brothers are staying mute on their future political ambitions.
