Mayor hoping federal subsidies for police forces are maintained

Chapala Mayor Moisés Anaya is distressed by the proposal of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to eliminate the Fortalecimiento para la Seguridad program from the 2021 federal budget.

FORTASEG subsidies granted to municipal governments have been applied to strengthen local public security operations.

Chapala’s police department has previously benefited from Fortaseg to fund construction of its new headquarters, purchase essential equipment and patrol vehicles, pay for officer training programs, hire additional staff and boost salaries.

“Cutting out Fortaseg resources would be disastrous not only for Chapala, but also other municipalities already stretched thin to fight pervasive crime all across the nation,” Anaya said. He and other Jalisco mayors are now lobbying federal legislators to vote against the president’s intention to scrap the program.
