Rosa Maria Perez and her daughter Cristal Avalos showed up early at Chapala’s Secundaria Tecnica 83 on Friday, March 6, anxious to sign up their canine companions Daisy and Paloma for the Operacion Amor sterilization campaign.

The Lake Chapala Society (LCS), the Instituto Nacional de las Personas Adultas Mayores (INAPAM) and the Instituto Nacional de Migracion (INM) are teaming up to guide the LCS membership and the expat community at large in getting through important and often cumbersome government accreditation procedures.

Officers said the action was prompted by an anonymous tip. The operation of the so-called tragamonedas (coin-gobblers) is prohibited by law on the premise that playing the gadgets is a highly addictive and wasteful pastime for children. However, the clandestine installation of such machines has become commonplace in scores of lakeside area mom-and-pop stores and thousands more small businesses across the nation as a method of generating extra off-the-books income.
