Chapala’s Avenida González Gallo project bulldozes ahead

The bottom to top reconstruction of the southern leg of Chapala’s Avenida González Gallo is moving forward at a snail’s pace due to the complexity of the work, according to project supervisor Javier Rodriguez.

A three-block stretch of the south-bound lane was completely torn up in late December for the installation of new water supply and sewage pipes, storm drains and underground electrical, cable television and telephone lines.  The project blueprint also calls for the reconstruction of sidewalks and the central median strip as a pathway for pedestrians and cyclists.

Rodriguez notes that progress has been hampered by numerous structural anomalies discovered in the existing infrastructure. In addition, setbacks in the work schedule have been caused by the overlap of Christmas holidays and this month’s Carnaval festivities.

However, the basic work on the west side of the street is essentially finished and ready to be filled in with the earth base for a new cemented cobblestone surface.  The supervisor expects to send part of the work crew across the road within the week to start ripping up sidewalks and oversized stone tree wells that border the Cristiania Park.

A project of this magnitude commonly takes about four and a half months to complete, Rodriguez noted. With a crew of around 100 local laborers now on the job in two work shifts operating from 8 a.m. to midnight, he is optimistic that the street will be in acceptable condition to be fully opened to traffic in time for the busy Easter vacation period in early April.
