US ambassador takes his leave, via Twitter of course

As Joe Biden took the oath of office to become the 46th president of the United States on Wednesday morning, Christopher Landau, the U.S. ambassador to Mexico, formally exited his post.

pg3The Trump appointee didn’t exactly go quietly. In keeping with most of his 17-month tenure, he documented the days leading up to his departure on Twitter, the social media platform on which he has accumulated 280,000 followers.   (He was even tweeting on the ambassador’s official feed up to the very last minute of his tenure on January 20.  It became inactive the moment Biden was sworn in.)

Hardly a day went by without Landau posting photos of his travels throughout Mexico – he liked to boast that he had visited all of the country’s 32 states. And as he packed up his belongings in the ambassador’s mansion in Mexico City this week, he shared images of the incredible assortment of artesenia he had collected on his travels, ready for shipping back to his home in the United States.

“One of my greatest pleasures has been this communication with hundreds of thousands of Mexicans through social networks,” he tweeted this week. “This is the new channel of diplomacy, especially during the pandemic.”
