To avoid further blackouts in northern Mexico, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has called on Mexicans to regulate their electricity use between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m.
His pleas came Thursday in the wake of Texas Governor Greg Abbot’s order a day earlier that Texas natural gas producers must not export out of state until February 21. Just over one quarter of Texas’ natural gas exports go to Mexico.
Not only have extreme winter conditions left most of Texas without power this week, but the arctic front also interrupted the flow of natural gas from Texas to power plants in northern Mexico, where 4.7 million people were left in the dark on Monday. And, according to bnamericas.com, Mexico’s maquila industry reported $US2.7 billion in manufacturing losses earlier this week as a result of the blackouts.
