Platinum Jubilee in Mexico

The celebration for the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II will extend to Mexico, reports Jon Benjamin, the British ambassador to Mexico.

This weekend, the United Kingdom is celebrating 70 years since the coronation of Elizabeth II, the longest reigning monarch in the history of the nation.

The four-day holiday weekend will include a mix of traditional British pageantry with community celebrations.

Writing in his London Eye column in El Excelsior newspaper, Benjamin said he will be hosting a Queen’s Birthday Party—“our embassy’s first major event after three years of the pandemic.”

Said Benjamin of Elizabeth II: “Through years of tremendous change in international affairs, the queen has been a source of continuity and stability. With her power to transcend politics and geography, she has touched the lives of millions of people, beyond our shores.”

Benjamin also highlighted the two trips Elizabeth II made to Mexico: In 1975, when she visited Mexico City, Guanajuato, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, Yucatán and Veracruz; and in 1983, when she toured Michoacán, Baja California Sur, Jalisco and Guerrero.
