Jalisco’s first female police chief takes charge

Named director of a Tlajomulco police department, Marisela Gomez Comos is the first woman to head a public security body in the state.

Marisela Gomez Comos was named director of a Tlajomulco de Zuñiga’s police department this past Monday.  She is the first woman to head a public security body in the state. The previous director, Gregorio Martinez, left to join the gubernatorial election campaign of Tlajomulco mayor (on leave) Enrique Alfaro.

Interim Mayor Alberto Uribe Camacho  announced a four percent raise in salary for the municipality’s police force and the incorporation of civil protection and firefighters into the Seguridad Pública. Thus Gomez will not only be in charge of the preventive police in this community that now makes up one of the six municipalities in metro Guadalajara, but its bomberos as well.

“This is the first time a woman will direct such a department,” said Uribe, “and she has the determination to lower the crime rate of the municipality.”

Gomez has racked up a lot of leadership experience in the security field, as director of the women’s prison in the Oblatos Penitentiary, director of Jalisco’s Center for Social Readaptation, director general of state’s Prevention and Social Readaptation organization and the director of Complaints and Citizen Services for the national Attorney General’s office.

She acknowledged the gravity of her responsibilities in these times of increased violence throughout the state and praised her predecessor, who increased patrols from nine to over 70 during his tenure.

The municipality has a high rate of minor crimes in the area of Santa Fe, Chulavista and Zona Valles.
