Medical personnel targeted in vile attacks

The Jalisco Attorney General’s Office (Fiscalía) has opened a special unit to investigate assaults on medical personnel.

As many as 11 attacks on health care workers have been reported since the start of the Covid-19 contingency, all in the Guadalajara metropolitan area.

The most recent incident occurred last weekend, when a nurse who was opening the trunk of her car outside her house had bleach (cloro) thrown over her. On April 13, an otolaryngologist was also showered with bleach as she walked her dog, and a day later a medical intern had hot coffee thrown over him as he took a bus to work.

The officers assigned to the unit will go to the victims’ homes or places of work to hear complaints, or receive them by videoconferencing.

Speaking at his regular morning press conference Thursday, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador called the attacks – which have also occurred in other parts of the country – “detestable,” saying Mexico’s medical personnel are “heroes and heroines who need our support.”
