Nora leaves trail of destruction

With winds of up to 120 kilometers per hour, category one Hurricane Nora pummeled the Jalisco coastline on its northward trajectory last weekend, causing sea surges, landslides, flash flooding and extensive damage to property — catastrophic in a few cases.

Ipg1cn Puerto Vallarta, authorities confirmed that a 13-year-old boy from Spain died when the two-story CoWork boutique hotel situated on the banks of the overflowing River Cuale partially collapsed. Governor Enrique Alfaro tweeted his condolences, noting that the family had emigrated from Spain seven years ago to make their home in the town.

Local rivers were converted into raging torrents as heavy rains pounded the hillsides above the popular tourist resort.

The intense force of the rushing water caused severe damage to both the vehicular and pedestrian bridges over the Cuale River.  A woman is still missing after she was dragged away in her car by the river’s fierce current.

As the level of the Cuale River rose, a mixture of water, mud and debris gushed into an adjoining 12-block area of the town center’s Romantic Zone, inundating scores of small retail stores and some private homes, and cutting power for 48 hours.
