Opera for kids: “Monkey see, monkey do”

The idea of contemporary opera might not be kids’ first choice of weekend entertainment.  Nonetheless, two fun operas, created especially for children, are being staged at the Teatro Diana on the weekend of May 25.

Written by San Antonio, Texas composer Robert X. Rodriguez, “Monkey see, monkey do” is  is a delightful half-hour six-character chamber opera  based on a traditional Mexican folk tale. It is one of the most frequently performed operas for children in the United States.

On the same bill is the 40-minute opera “La niña que riega la albahaca” by Mexican Isaac Bañuelos, which is adapted from a a text by Spanish poet  Federico Garcia Lorca.

Teatro Diana, Saturday, May 25, 6 p.m. and Sunday, May 26, 1 p.m. 120-280 pesos.
