Tuesday recitals
The Degollado Theater opens its doors each Tuesday for the free classical music series Martes de Musica y Opera. No tickets are sold nor is there numbered seating. Just turn up before the performance and grab a seat. The quality is always exceptional, and the theater will often fill up.
July 7: Baroque Kings, opera and sacred music from the 18th century. Works by Handel, Nicola A. G. Porpora, Vivaldi. Featuring Riccardo Angelo Strano (contratenor); Bruno Landi, Adan Madrigal (violins); Porfirio Preciado (harpsichord); Mariana Martinez (cello) and Antonio Beck (double bass).
July 14: From Bach to Debussy, also including works by Bohm, Purcell, del Moral, Poulenc, Rachmaninov, Parisotti, Chopin. Featuring Mari Camarena (soprano) and Jorge Verdin (piano).
July 21: Nova Duo featuring Valentina and Noemi Gasparini (violins) and Blandine Tricot (piano). Works by Bartok, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Haydn, Bach, Locatelli, Ysaye.
July 28: Anniversary Concert by the Orquesta Sinfonica de Zapopan, directed by Guillermo Salvador, and the Zapopan Municipal Choir, directed by Santiago Cumplido. “Overture to Candide” by Leonard Bernstein, Cantatas BWV 131 by Bach, Concerto in F Major for Three Pianos and Orchestra by Mozart and The Polovetsian Dances by Borodin.

Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra
In a concert titled “Russian Brillance,” acclaimed Russian pianist Alexei Volodin interprets Prokofiev’s concerts numbers 1 and 3. The concert will close with “Petrouchka” by Igor Stravinski, a work famed for its energy and inventiveness.

The Orquesta Sinfonia Juvenil de Guadalajara performs music by the Fab Four.

Choral work
The Zapopan Municipal Choir perform the opera “Orpheus and Eurydice” composed by Christoph Willibald Gluck. The story is based on the myth of Orpheus, set to a libretto by Ranieri de’ Calzabigi.

Eight Voices
A special recital has been scheduled to mark 20 years of musical performances in the University of Guadalajara’s regal Paraninfo, the former rectory building on Avenida Juarez that is home to one of Jose Clemente Orozco’s most famous murals. Santiago Cumplido will direct eight talented singers interpreting pieces by Lotti, Gesualdo, Marenzio, Ciconia and Allegri, among others.

Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra
Marco Parisotto will conduct “Rhythms of Mexico and the Spain of Albeniz,” featuring Korean Wonny Song on piano. The concert will later be performed at the prestigious Musica Maru festival in Busan, South Korea.

Mexican-American pop duo composed of sisters Hanna Nicole Pérez Mosa, 20, and Ashley Grace Pérez Mosa, 18. Combining a mixture of commercial Latin pop and country rhythms, the Mexican-based duo has become very successful, especially in their hometown of Lake Charles, Louisiana.

Guadalajara city hall’s Ballet Folclorico Guadalajara began its annual series of Thursday evening summer/fall shows on July 2. The theme of their season is “Cielito Lindo.”

Corteo
The magic of Canadian-based circus arts troupe Cirque du Soleil returns to Guadalajara with “Corteo,” a show that debuted in Montreal in 2005 and has subsequently been seen by eight million people in 19 countries. Meaning “cortege” in Italian, “Corteo” is a joyous procession, a festive parade imagined by a clown. The show combines the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy and spontaneity situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth. The troupe employs talented performers from all over the world.
