State Ballet in Ajijic for first time

The Joven Ballet of Jalisco will formally introduce itself to the residents of Lake Chapala with diverse and interesting performances at the Auditorio de la Ribera in La Floresta on Saturday, October 24 and Sunday, October 25.

In addition to the Tchaikovsky pas de deux, the White and Black Swan pas de deux from Swan Lake and the Sugar Plum Fairy pas de duex from Nutcracker will be danced. Modern pieces to be performed include the comic piece Munecos, Idilio and Danzon.  Le Bourgeois, as well as Easy Winners, the featured work in September at the Degollado Theater, are also included in the program.

This professional company not only performs established ballets but introduces new ones that have been created by foreign choreographers, the director and the two company ballet masters. Dariusz Blaje was a principal of the Bejart Ballet in Belgium and the National Ballet of Mexico before becoming the Joven Ballet’s director.

While the word “Joven” in the company name may mislead some ballet lovers to think the company is a school performance group, this is a misconception. It is the only fully professional company in Jalisco and sponsored by the state government.  Dancers work full time, with classes six days a week from 9:30 to 11:15 a.m. followed by rehearsals from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Auditions are publicized internationally, and current and former dancers have come from the United States., Cuba, Guatemala, Italy and all parts of Mexico.

Tickets for next weekend’s presentations are 200 pesos for center seats and 140 pesos for side seats.
