Acting showcase

Theater lovers can see the results of this week’s Bravo! Theatre acting workshop on Sunday, April 12, from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

The presentation consists of seven delightful scenes from plays by Neil Simon, Noel Coward, Tennessee Williams and other important writers. The actors include a mix of experienced professionals and talented local thespians.

The workshop was held under the guidance of well-known actress and director Roseann Wilshere, with support from Bravo Theatre director Jayme Littlejohn, both of whom will be appearing in the showcase presentation.

The first piece is by Neil Simon and features Douglas Pinkerton and Patricia Guy in a comedic scene from “The Prisoner of Second Avenue.” This is followed by a classic funny scene from Noel Coward’s famous “Blythe Spirit,” starring Littlejohn and Barbara Pruitt.

Next is a scene from Simon’s “The Gingerbread Lady,” starring Diane Jones and Tina Leonard. Judy Long and Littlejohn will then entertain with humor from “Little Miss Fresno” by Mary Gallagher and Ara Watson.

Lovers of Tennessee Williams will be delighted to see a great scene from “A Perfect Analysis Given by a Parrot,” starring Wilshere and Alysson de Jong.  There will then be a drama treat with a scene from Canadian playwright George Walker and his play “Problem Child,” which stars Pepper Drebes and Lynn Paris Drebes. Finally, Norb Michel and Kathleen Morris should get the audience laughing with Christopher Durang’s “Beyond Therapy.”

Music is by Emma Bergh-Apton and lighting by Amara Browers.  Stage manager is Pierre Blackburn.

The new Bravo Theatre is located at Rio Bravo 10B in West Ajijic,.  A donation of  50 pesos is requested. ASA

In spite of a chilly, rainy evening last month, a large crowd attended the opening reception of the Ajijic Society of the Arts (ASA) 35th Annual Judged Show at the Ajijic Casa de Cultura and stayed to vote on their favorite piece for the People’s Choice Award.

The judges selected for the event selected pieces in a variety of mediums to receive ribbons for first, second, and third place, as well as the best in show, which went to Jennifer Miller’s oil painting, “Frida Kahlo.”

First-place ribbons in other categories went to: Marian Decker’s “Upon Reflection” in acrylics, Betty Petterson’s “Tibetan Woman” in drawing pastel, Frank Howell’s “Sol Furioso” in ceramics/pottery, Rick Present’s “Untitled II” in mixed media, Ardelle Holden’s “Caballero” in photography, Jan Steinbright’s “Avian Dream” in basketry/sculpture, Gethyn Soderman’s “Interdependence” in textiles, Stephany Andrews’ “Mountain Refuge” in watercolor, Benjamine’s “Saturday Night” in metal jewelry, Ena Ruckendorfer’s “An Evening in Marseille” in non-metal jewelry.

ASA reinstated the People’s Choice Awards three years ago. Visitors are instructed to vote for the one piece in the show that speaks to them rather than to chose the one they might hang over the sofa because it matches the fabric. Those compiling the results noted that attendees had chosen art pieces created in media that is more “out-of-the-norm.” Among the four awards were pieces in textile, in a new alcohol ink media, wood and pastel.

Gethyn Soderman took top honors in the People’s Choice selections with “Interdependence,” the piece that won the top spot in the textile category. “Lucy’s Roses” by Marcia Lavender took second place, with Hershel Clepper’s “H&C Railroad” in third place and Inak Gieysztor’s “San Antonio Waterfront” in fourth.

ASA, one of lakeside’s oldest organizations, continues to be committed to producing great shows twice a year, plaza events on the third Sunday of each month and regular meetings on the first Monday of each month featuring creative speakers.

There’s a new ASA Facebook page and some of the artists have formed small groups for support in their favorite media. An ASA metalsmith has volunteered to mentor someone who is interested in learning her skills. Also, day trips are being planned with organizer John McWilliams at the helm.  An August visit to the Bustamante factory in Tlaquepaque is in the works with more trips to follow.

ASA is a vital lakeside group that is growing. The quality of the art being produced reflects that energy.
