Ribera Arts Review - June 5, 2015

Collective Show

The Artists de Ajijic and their invited guests will inaugurate a collective show in the Centro Cultural de Ajijic on Saturday, June 6, 6 p.m. Those attending will be invited to share a congratulatory cocktail as they browse the art on view at the center. All media will be represented in this show, which remains in place for two weeks.

Harp Festival

Music lovers should make a bee line for 13th Encuentro de Arpas, Salterios y Mas, an offbeat music festival featuring traditional Mexican and Latin American sounds performed on folk harps, psalteries and a wide array of other string and acoustical instruments. 

The event is held Wednesday, June 10, on the grounds of the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo, and runs non-stop from 2 to 10 p.m. 

Admission to the public is free of charge, although voluntary contributions to defray festival expenses are gratefully accepted. 

Spectators are welcome to come and go as they please throughout the eight-hour muscial marathon and bring along their own snacks, drinks and outdoor picnic gear. Soft drinks and food catered by Tony’s Restaurant will be sold on site, along with and music CDs and souvenirs offered by the performers. 

12 Artists Exhibition

A dozen highly talented artists will be on hand to display examples of their work at an exhibit titled “12 Dreams, 12 Artists,” hosted by Ar

den Muebles on Saturday, June 13.

This show responds to a rapidly growing interest in the avant-garde movement, says Karla Owings, director of the Trazo Gallery in Guadalajara. “On very few occasions can we gather in such a relaxed environment to meet artists who have made such an impact on the ever-changing world of art over the last 20 years.”

These artists have displayed their works in galleries around the world.  Don’t miss this opportunity to view their extraordinary art, meet the creators and perhaps acquire the perfect piece for your home or office.

Arden is located at located at Av. Hidalgo (Carr. Chapala-Ajijic) 222-A in Riberas de Pilar. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Tapas and cocktails will be served.

Ajijic Orchestra

Quality musicians are coming from around the lake and as far away as Tizapan el Alto to join in rehearsals for the first performance of Ajijic’s newly formed orchestra, the Sinfonica Del Lago (Symphony of the Lake) on Sunday, June 14. 

The concert, titled “Music of the Cinema,” will begin at 6 p.m. on the new stage of the Teatro del Pueblo in the Centro Cultural de Ajijic. 

On the podium will be Tlaquepaque native Alberto De Loza. 

“We are excited about our first concert, “ he says. “There has been so much work happening in the Centro Cultural and the new boards will be in place on the stage floor by concert time. Our concert will also help fund additional improvements in the wonderful community

showplace.” 

De Loza studied violin and viola as a child, and then entered the University of Guadalajara Music School at the age of 13. After obtaining his music degree, he later studied in master classes in Chicago, Mexico City and the University of Xalapa. By 2010 de Loza and his business partner Eduardo Ulloa (working under the name RCM Productions) was directing, arranging and producing musical spectaculars with the symphony orchestras of Hidalgo, Xalapa, Puebla and Jalisco. 

Admission for the concert is 100 pesos for adults and 50 pesos for students and can be paid at the door before the concert. 

Piano Concert

Viva la Musica presents brilliant young pianist Sergio Parra performing Beethoven’s “Pathetique” and “Tempest” piano sonatas, Brahms’ Prelude No.5 and pieces by Rachmaninoff and Albeniz on Thursday, June 18, 7 p.m. in the Auditorio de la Ribera del Lago. 

Parra, who is also a talented composer, received a Viva scholarship to study composition in a workshop at the New York Summer Music Festival in July. 

Born in Celaya, Guanajuato, he revealed extraordinary musical talents at an early age. After studying with Abdiel Partida at the Academy of Art in Sonora, Parra entered the University of Guadalajara for professional music studies.

He has taken master classes from great pianists such as Alla von Buch, Michael Markov and, most recently, from Anatoly Zatin in Colima. Parra studied orchestration and composition with greats such as Arturo Marquez and Juan Pablo Contreras. instrumental technique with Mario Lavista, vocal technique with Carmina Escobar, and chamber music performance with flautist Miguel Angel Villanueva and violinist Arturo Romero.

Tickets for this concert at 200 pesos are available at the Auditorio, Diane Pearl Colecciones and the Lake Chapala Society box office on Thursday and Fridays from 10 a.m. until noon, and at the door.

Ecological Display

Jocotepec’s Culture Department presents “Relacion Visual de Nuestra Biodiversidad,”  a multi-media  observance that links in with World Environment Day, on Friday, June 12, 8 p.m. 

These events are designed to remind area residents of the relationship and fragile balance between the natural and artificial elements that are part of today’s world and to bring to the forefront reminders of the ecological steps that can be taken to improve our surroundings.
