Naked Stage

“The Psychic,” a clever comedy/mystery by Sam Bobric, is the next production of the Naked Stage Theater.

Directed by Collette Clavadetscher, the play features a cast comprised of  Allen McGill, Michael Warren, Barbara Pruitt, Judy Long, Jon DeYoung, Bob Jones and Jim Ryan.

The play runs Friday, June 26; Saturday, June 27 and Sunday, June 28. The bar opens at 3 p.m. and the box office at 3:15 p.m. Shows start at 4 p.m.

In “The Psychic,” a down-and-out mystery writer, unable to pay his rent, hangs up a sign offering psychic readings in his window. To his surprise, he blurts out to his first customer, an attractive young woman, that her husband is planning to kill her. Much to his alarm and confusion he soon finds himself embroiled in a string of bizarre and hilarious murders.

The Naked Stage is located at Rio Bravo 10, Ajijic. Turn left on Rio Bravo and drive about two blocks toward the lake.

New Orchestra

The first performance of Ajijic’s newly formed orchestra, the Sinfonica del Lago, is slated for Sunday, June 14, 6 p.m. 

Under the baton of Alberto de Lozo, the orchestra will interpret the program, “Music of the Cinema,” on the new stage of the Teatro del Pueblo in the Centro Cultural de Ajijic (on the main plaza).

Tickets for the performance are set at 100 pesos for adults and 50 pesos for students, and are available in the center’s gift shop or at the door. 

Proceeds from the event will help with the expenses of the improvements in the cultural center. 

Tall Boys Fundraiser

The Tall Boys Band are headlining a fabulous fundraiser on Wednesday, June 17 for local singer, composer and performer Bill Vincent, who has experienced multiple health crises in the past few months. 

Vincent, who is also known as a premier light and sound guy, and his wife Kitt, have been generous with their time and talents for many events and groups in the community and this is a way to help pay back. 

The evening begins at 6 p.m. at Mama’s Bar on Calle Jesus Garcia in San Antonio Tlayacapan with a Mexican buffet followed by entertainment by the Tall Boys Band in the adjoining events building. Other activities will include a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle.

In place of tickets, attendees will wear wrist bands which, for 200 pesos, entitles them to dinner and entertainment. For 350 pesos, the bracelet adds unlimited drinks during the evening. At the door, tickets for the entertainment and fundraiser only will be 100 pesos.

Improv Classes

John Ward and Jayme Littlejohn are in search of actors, spouses, crazy people and a few normal folks looking for fun and ready to expose their creativity through improvisation. 

The series of classes will meet on Saturdays from 1 to 3:30 p.m., beginning on Saturday, June 20, at the Bravo Theatre on Rio Bravo in Ajijic.

Art Auction

Efren Gonzalez, director of the Centro Cultural Ajijic, will display his considerable skill as an auctioneer when a selection of works by local artists goes on the block at Saturday, June 20, 4 p.m. 

The proceeds from the sales of oils, watercolors, pastels, photography, sculptures and other media will go toward the building of the Teatro de Pueblo in the center. Some of the pieces will have a minimum bid restriction placed by the artist, and many of the artists will display other works of art in the plaza during the day. 

Pianist Sergio Parra

Acclaimed pianist Sergio Parra will perform at the Auditorio de la Ribera in la Floresta, Ajijic0 on Thursday, June 18, 7 p.m.  Presented by Viva la Musica, the program includes favorite pieces by Beethoven, Brahms, Rachmaninoff and Albeniz. Tickets at 200 pesos are available at Diane Pearl Colecciones or at the door. 

Fete de la Musique

The second  edition of World Music Day (Fete de la Musique) hits the “4” Restaurant in Ajijic on Sunday, June 21. 

The fun starts at noon and continues throughout the day and evening (until midnight) with 14 musicians and bands performing.  Among those confirmed are Daniel Cordero, Ricardo y Blanca, Black Swan-Diamonds, Dirty Hueso, Charales-K, Victor Garcia, Ximena Díaz, 2nd#Melody, Noe Raygoza Villar con Paco and Jim Barto, Caracol Sound System, La Maquina del Tiempo Desnivel, Zona Cuba and Lady Horse.

Billed as “the Musicians Party for the People,” the performers will not be charging a fee and admission is free of charge. Sponsors include Corazon de Malta, Superlake, Camera de Comercio, Jiparmex, Coca Cola and Dos Equis Beer.

Vercam Duet

Jorge Verdin (pianist) and Mary Camarena (soprano) will present a recital in Chapala’s Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo (old train station) on Thursday, June 25, 7 p.m. 

The Vercam Duet’s repertoire ranges from baroque to contemporary and explores a varied range of classical composers and periods of composition. Verdin and Camarena select music from the 16th century to the very edge of what is being composed now – from Bach to Debussy, Rachmaninoff to Schoenberg –with pieces in several languages by composers such as Henry Purcell, Bernard Hermann and Jorge del Moral, and also some piano solos. The splendid, rich and crystalline voice of Camarena with the unique and expressive piano technique of Verdin make for an unforgettable concert.

Verdin has studied in Spain, Germany and Mexico and his focus is on classical and jazz. Camarena has 15 years of experience in world music and opera. This duet from Guadalajara has been performing together for three years. A portion of the 200-peso donation goes toward the cultural center.

Romantic Mexican Music 

Bohemias Tapatias presents popular Guadalajara group, the Trovadores Tapatios, in a gala musical dinner show at the La Floresta Yacht Club on Saturday, June 26, from 6:30 until 9 p.m.

Billed as a concert of boleros, the evening’s entertainment will include some of Mexico’s best melodies and favorite romantic songs along with a selection of international hits.  Included in the 260-peso ticket price is dinner, entertainment, wine and raffle participation. 

The group comprises Lorena del Carmen, Flavio Abraham, Jose Goart, Victor G. Canizales y Sauloa.
