Ribera Arts Review - October 17, 2015

Piano Four Hands

Brilliant European trained pianists Marita Zimmer and Blandine Tricot will perform music for piano four hands (two pianists on one piano); including Eight Waltzes by Johannes Brahms, Petite Suite by Claude Debussy, Danzas Eslavas by Dvorak and a Sonata by Francis Poulenc, when Viva la Musica presents its next concert on Thursday, October 22, 7 p.m. in the Auditorio de la Ribera del Lago. 

Tickets for Piano Four Hands are 200 pesos and available at Diane Pearl Colecciones and at the Auditorium. Viva la Musica is a non-profit organization awarding scholarships to Mexican music students.

ASA Themed Show

The Ajijic Society of the Arts (ASA) fall themed show opens at the Centro Cultural de Ajijic Saturday, October 24, 5 p.m. The artworks will remain in place at the center through Saturday, November 7. 

Works entered in this show will be judged for their quality. For the first time, judges will give special recognition to the piece that best interprets the show’s theme, “The Nature of Mexico.”

Judges for this show are the ASA members and one of the group’s legacy members. 

ASA members will display and sell additional pieces of their artwork on the Ajijic plaza on Sunday, October 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. 

Showstoppers

Los Cantantes del Lago will hit the stage with their sixth annual Showstoppers concert on Sunday, October 25 , 4 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church.

The show will feature a new program of favorite songs and an array of new singers. 

Highlights of the concert will include an octet from Guadalajara, as well as a “six-hands” piano routine. 

The annual concert costs 200 pesos and is a fundraiser to help the local choral group defray their ongoing expenses and stockpile money for their next international concert tour, says Music Director Tim Welch.

Dazzling Dancers

Pick a date to catch Ballet Son de Mexico’s brand new stage production.  The stellar folklorico troupe from San Juan Cosala will appear at the Auditorio de la Ribera on three consecutive Sundays, November 1, 8 and 15, noon, and finally Friday, November 20, 6 p.m. The program will feature live musicians and the group’s debut of the Danza del Venado (Yaqui Deer Dance), along with lively routines representing Michoacan, Guerrero, Nayarit and Jalisco. Tickets going for 150 pesos are now on sale at at Yoly’s Unisex Salon, Efren Gonzalez Gallery, Diana Pearl Colecciones and the auditorium  box office. 

Children’s Art Contest

Winners of the 4th Annual Feria Maestros del Arte Contest for the Lake Chapala Society Children’s Art Program were announced in a special ceremony in the society’s gazebo on Saturday, October 10. They will be recognized at the Feria on Saturday, November 14, 2 p.m. The six top-ranking entries in the contest will be displayed at the Feria which runs from Friday, November 13 to Sunday, November 15 at the Yacht Club in Chapala. 

Children attending the Saturday sessions of the Children’s Art Program worked three consecutive weeks on their entries, which reflected the 2015 contest theme, “Mexican Textiles.” The first, second and third place winners received cash awards of 500, 300 and 200 pesos. The three students who were awarded honorary mention garnered 100 pesos. 

Those receiving a certificate, a poster of their work and the cash prize from the Feria board were: first prize, Cielo Itzú de la Cruz Arceo (age 13); second prize, Erasmo Miguel Velasques (age 11); third prize, Luis Ramos (age 12). Honorary mention was awarded to Luis Francisco Gallardo Terrones (age 11), Kenhya Mariana Hernandez Durán (age 9), and Erika S. Morales (age 11). 

The annual support and incentive provided by the Feria Maestros del Arte’s contest and the group’s board is an appreciated boost for the LCS Children’s Art Program.
