Ribera Arts Review - September 30, 2023

Art Auction

Efren Gonzalez holds a Day of the Dead art auction Thursday, October 12, 4 p.m. on the north side of the Ajijic Plaza.

Find oils, watercolors, acrylics, photography and more by Gonzalez, his three artistic children - Leo, Paula and Zyanya - as well as Bruno Mariscal, Ernesto Barba, Monica Cardenas, Kenya Paoce and Isidro Xilonxochitl, among others. Tequila will be served.

The artworks will be on display as of 10 a.m.

This event helps pay for the more than 2,000 candles that light the Day of the Dead skull murals in front of the San Andres Church and near the Ajijic Museo de Arte. Other expenses include flowers and workers to help place and light the candles.

New exhibit

Galeria Monica Cardenas and Galeria Marisa Martinez open an art exhibition Thursday, October 5, at Pancho’s West Restaurant and Gallery with a cocktail from 4 to 6 p.m. Meet artists Antonio Lopez Vega, Monica Cardenas, Claudia Nery, David Lorenz Winston, Beth Myers, Xill Fessenden and April Duran.

Also on display will be works by Luci Williams.

Exhibits

• Original paintings for the 2024 Our Beloved Mexico Calendar by Belva and Enrique Velazquez are now on display at Arte Estudio Velazquez, 16 de Septiembe 7 in Ajijic. The calendars are now available for sale as well. Personalized artist signing of calendars will be held Wednesday, October 25, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Thursday, October 26, 4 to 7 p.m.

• “The Soulful Illusions,” a retrospective exhibit by photographer Monica Cardenas, is up at Casa del Sol Inn, Javier Mina 7 in Ajijic.

• The Ajijic Museo de Arte (AMA) continues with an exhibit of paintings on loan or acquired for the permanent collection. AMA is at Privada Flores Magon 3. Open daily except Mondays. The entry fee is 40 pesos.

Art and Rock

pg17bLa Estacion Pizza and Bakery above Pancho’s Market in Riberas del Pilar will be the site of an art and rock sensorial fest  Saturday, October 7, 5 p.m. Paintings by Abril Duran, Nadina Villanueva, Leonardo Gonzalez, Ernesto Barba and Laubal Natural will be on display, as well as photographs by Amanda Murray, Arturo Orgega, Jazmin Stengel and glass and ceramic works by Sergio Cuevas. Cosmi Marbles will perform. A cover charge of 150 pesos includes a welcome cocktail. An auction and prizes will be given. Ten percent of the proceeds will be donated to the Indigenous Community of Mezcala. Dance, eat, rock out and have fun.

Concerts in the Park

The Jersey Boys, starring Marc Lopez, perform “Who Loves Ya Baby?,” “Sweet Caroline,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” and more Tuesday, October 10, with shows at 2:30 and 5:30 p.m. at the Lake Chapala Society. Tickets, 350 general seating and 500 pesos VIP seating, are available at the LCS office or at lakechapalasociety.com.

Jazz

Panamanian Saxophonist Marcos Diaz performs with Ronaldo Rivero on piano, Juan Castsñon on guitar, Freddy Adrian on bass and Alex Medeles on drums at Huerto Cafe in Riberas del Pilar, Saturday, October 21, 1:30 p.m. Tickets are 150 pesos. Reservations: 376-108-0843.

Cine and Dance

Centro Cultural Ajijic (CCA) will screen “Salon Mexico (1948) by director Emilio “El Indio” Fernandez, Sunday, October 15, 4 p.m. No cost.

At 6 p.m., a costume contest of pachucos and rumberas will be held, plus a presentation of salon dancing by the Ocodance Academia de Baile.

The cost for this event is 250 pesos at the door or 200 pesos advance purchase, including one drink. Tickets available at CCA, Monday to Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
