Being Jack Unterweger

John Malkovich is coming to the Pearl of the West to star in “The Infernal Comedy,” a play about Jack Unterweger. Unterweger was an Austrian serial killer whose autobiography and plays written in prison earned him the admiration of Austria’s intellectuals, who, convinced of his rehabilitation, successfully petitioned for his early release in 1990. Unterweger traveled the world in his new career as a star journalist, but a new trail of dead women soon caught up with him. Malkovich and playwright Michael Sturminger focus on the dichotomies in the charming writer and murderer of women.

This is not Malkovich’s first time doing a play in Guadalajara. In 2009 he directed Diego Luna and others in a Spanish-language version of Zach Helm’s “The Good Canary.”

“The Infernal Comedy” will be presented in Austrian-accented English, with Spanish subtitles. Wednesday, April 18, 9 p.m. at the Teatro Diana, Tickets 550 pesos and up.

Street art

Fourteen artists have won bids put out by the Guadalajara City Hall to spruce up various tunnels and underpasses around the city with designs ranging from abstract to cartoonish. The first has already been completed at the junction of Niños Heroes and Inglaterra. The rest should be finished by the end of the year. The above photo is an artistic representation of how one of the tunnels will look.

Video theater

National Theatre Live continues in April with a production of Irish author Oliver Goldsmith’s 1773 comedy “She Stoops to Conquer.” Hardcastle has found an exciting marriage prospect for his daughter, but thanks to a practical joke, the suitor takes their home for an inn and treats his gracious hosts accordingly. All’s not lost, however, when he begins to woo the coquettish “barmaid.” Sprinkle in an inheritance scheme and the obligatory sidekicks with their secret romance and see why this classic comedy of errors is one of the few plays of its century to continues to enjoy viable performances.

The Teatro Diana will show the broadcast on Tuesday, April 24, 8 p.m. General admission 130 pesos. Students, teachers and seniors 110 pesos.
