Rorschach art exhibit

A peculiar exhibition of “Rorschach heads” by José Manuel Ciria that goes by the name “Miradas Especulares” has opened at the Museo de Arte Raul Anguiano (MURA). Ciria based his collection of expressive faces on psychology, hoping to hold a mirror up to the viewer.

Rorschach is a fictional comic book superhero and an antihero of the acclaimed DC Comics miniseries Watchmen.

Ciria is a Spanish painter, born in the United Kingdom, who has been active since the early 1980s. Writer and filmmaker Artur Balder’s documentary covering his life is set to debut in May 2013 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

MURA is located at Av. Mariano Otero 375, one block from the Niños Heroes Monument. It is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Entrance is 15.50 pesos general, eight pesos for teachers and students, free for seniors. Free for all on Tuesdays. Catch the “Miradas Especulares” exhibit until May 28.

Mariachi event

The show promises to incorporate folk, classical and newer forms of dance alongside visual elements and, of course, mariachi music. Performers will come from as far away as Chicago and Shanghai. April 9-14, 8 p.m. Tickets 60-130 pesos.

World Book Day was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1995 to encourage reading. Organized by City Hall and the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL), the mass reading events have been taking place annually in Jalisco since 2002.
