Naked ride

For the second year in a row, Guadalajara will participate in the World Naked Bike Ride. Hundreds of nude cyclists will take part in the ride which begins on the corner of Avenida Mexico and Chapultepec at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 9.

The aim is to draw attention to cyclists, highlighting their vulnerability in front of traffic in Guadalajara. Over 1,000 people wearing little or no clothing took part in last year’s inaugural event.

Free tree

Help convert Guadalajara into an “urban forest” by growing a tree in your backyard at no cost. That’s the idea to aid the environment from Extra, a Jalisco-based civil association formed of media groups and private businesses.

Extra planted 250,000 trees in Jalisco last year and aim to double that amount in 2012. There are ten different species of tree to choose from. Call (33) 3123-1133 to claim your free tree.

New foundation

Guadalajara-born Formula One driver Sergio “Checo” Perez has launched a charity organization based on his favorite childhood TV shows.

The Checo Perez Foundation was inspired by two symbols of children’s comedy in Mexico: the “Chapulin Colorado” and “El Chavo del Ocho.”

The latter character was an orphan and Perez’s foundation will be dedicated to helping children who have lost their parents. It will be run by his sister Paola Perez.

In this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix, Perez will wear a helmet bearing the image of spoof superhero “Chapulin Colorado,” (Red Grasshopper). The helmet will then be auctioned with profits going to the foundation.

“It means a lot to me to be able to give something back, I’m lucky to be where I am and every day I thank God that I am living my dreams,” Perez said.

In his second F1 season, Perez currently sits tenth on the leaderboard with 22 points.

Mexpat

The next meeting of the Mexpat group will take place at the Hotel Riu at Lopez Mateos 830, corner of Niños Heroes, on Thursday, May 31, from 7-11 p.m.

Mexpat brings together a wide range of expatriates from diverse countries each month to network and get acquainted with new and old friends.
