Trompo Magico

The science area at the excellent Trompo Magico Children’s Museum has installed a special planetary exhibit for the summer.  Among its novelties, Travesía Cosmica includes a black hole simulator and a machine that tells people their equivalent weights on the moon, Saturn and other planets.  The interactive exhibit is on loan from the Planetario Alfa de Monterrey.

Shanghai festival

Zapopan hosts the Shanghai Cultural Festival this Saturday, with a lineup featuring conferences, exhibitions, live music, painting and Chinese calligraphy. Organizers promise it will be a “great opportunity to sample the diversity of ancient Chinese culture.” The festival takes place on one day only: Saturday, June 9, from 4 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. at the Mueso de Arte de Zapopan (20 de Noviembre 166, beside the huge plaza facing the Basilica). Entry is free.

St. Mark’s sale

A rummage sale is set at St. Mark’s Anglican Church for Sunday, June 17, 11:30 a.m. Clothing, kitchen wares and much more. Aztecas and Chichimecas in Colonia Monraz, a two-minute drive north of Plaza Mexico or end of bus route 33-A.

Jalisco State Choir

The excellent Jalisco State Choir is putting on free recitals at different locations across the city this month.

First up is Plaza Galerias (Rafael Sanzio and Vallarta) on Friday, June 8, 7 p.m.; followed by Parroquia Colinas de San Javier (Paseo de la Noria 3485 and Paseo Via Acueducto) on Wednesday, June 13, 8.30 p.m.; the Templo de San Jose (Av. Paseo Jose Maria Escriva 500, Colinas de San Javier) on Tuesday, June 19, 8.30 p.m.; the Templo de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe (Alcalde 527, and Juan Alvarez) on Friday, June 22, 8.45 p.m.; the Semenario Mayor de Guadalajara (Santo Domingo 1120, Colonia Chapalita) on Tuesday, June 26, 8.30 p.m. and finally at Plaza del Sol (Lopez Mateos and Mariano Otero) on Friday, June 29, 7 p.m.

Reforestation

As part of a reforestation program backed by the state and municipal governments, dozens of volunteers spent last weekend planting 2,500 trees on the north and northwestern stretch of Guadalajara’s Periferico beltway. Many of the volunteers were young children and adolescents.

Euro 2012

Sixteen European nations take part in Euro 2012, the soccer tournament held every four years that kicks off on Friday, June 8 in Poland and the Ukraine. Guadalajara’s French speakers should note that the Alianza Francesa will show France’s games live on a big screen, including France vs. England on Monday, June 11, 11 a.m. The Alianza Francesa is located at Lopez Cotilla 1199. Entry is free.
