Father’s Day
The upmarket Plaza Galerias Mall (Vallarta and Rafael Sanzio) is putting on a special music show for dads on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 17, when The Rockets will play a tribute to The Beatles at 6 p.m. in the mall’s atrium.
Over at the Andares mall (Patria and Acueducto), the band Zamba will entertain folks with rumba and flamenco sounds from 6 to 8 p.m. Andares puts on live performances Wednesdays through Sundays, starting at either 5 or 6 p.m. See the calendario at www.anadres.com for the full schedule
Phil Weigand documentary
A documentary in tribute to late archeologist Phil Weigand will be screened in the Cabañas Institute on Friday, June 15.
Born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1937, Weigand spent over 40 years uncovering the pre-Hispanic civilizations of western Mexico. His knowledge of different disciplines, including history, archeology, geology and anthropology provided him with a distinct perspective of these ancient cultures. His greatest achievement was discovering and excavating the unique circular pyramids of Guachimontones, Jalisco’s finest archeological site.
Weigand died last September at the age of 74. The Spanish-language documentary “Phil Weigand: Explorador de Todos los Tiempos” is a fine tribute to this intrepid explorer.

Moncayo
A series of events has been planned to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth (June 29) of Jose Pablo Moncayo, composer of the classic masterwork “Huapango.” The Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra will interpret his famous “Sinfonietta for Orchestra” on June 22 and 24 (see page 23), while the Ensamble Filarmonico de Guadalajara and various youth orchestras from the metropolitan area will gather for a special tribute to Moncayo on Thursday, June 28 at the Degollado Theater. A plaque honoring Moncayo will be unveiled in the theater’s foyer prior to the concert.
A documentary style photographic exhibit on Moncayo’s life and work will open at the Ex Convento del Carmen on June 29, and the same venue will host conferences on the great musician’s contribution to Mexican culture on June 25, 26, 27 and 29, all at 8:30 p.m.
The musical legacy of Moncayo, who died prematurely in 1958, is considered one of Mexico’s finest with compositions that are synonymous with the resurgence of Mexican nationalism in the 1940s and 50s.
