Day of the Dog

To celebrate the “Day of the Dog” on Sunday, July 22, the Parque Metropolitano in Zapopan’s Colonia La Estancia will be erecting a “dog city” with special activities (including a “shoe pool”?) and special food available for man’s best friend.

The expansive park has become a haven for dogs and classes for owners are being held at weekends providing instruction on how to correctly manage canines in public spaces.

In other activities, from 9 a.m. there will be “doggy buses” taking dogs and their owners from Avenida Chapultepec on a tour of pet-friendly sites across the city.

Circus in town

The Ataide Hermanos circus is now in town despite the recent ruling by Zapopan city hall to prohibit circus animal acts (see page 5).

Famed tiger tamer, singer and TV star Nickitta is the main attraction, alongside her white tigers. The show also features elephants and, less controversially, an array of clowns, jugglers and acrobats.

The circus  is located beside La Normal Traffic Circle, at the convergence of Alcalde and Circumvalacion. There are shows every night though late August at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. from Monday to Saturday and 4 p.m., 6:15 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Sunday. For more information call (33) 1675-7060.

Reforestation

The first phase of reforestation in the Bosque Primavera took place last Sunday, with 1,200 volunteers planting 10,000 pine trees in a nine-hectare area that was badly damaged in a 2005 forest fire.  Another 2,500 volunteers are expected to help out in further reforestation efforts on July 22 and 29. Those interested in lending a hand must register in advance by calling (33)3110-0693, 3110-1828 or emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. ‘Canelo’
