American School Art Fest

An institution at the American School of Guadalajara since 1978, the annual Art Fest offers professional artists a space to showcase and sell their work.

The festivities begin with a formal auction on Friday, November 9, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Club de Industriales (Morelos and Tepic).  Many of the local artists participating in the fair donate a piece of art for the auction.  In addition, works by Mexican artists with international renown can also be bid for.  This year, works by Jose Luis Cuevas, Francisco Toledo and Rafæl Coronel will be on the block.

The auction guide, featuring all the artworks on offer, can be obtained from the American School or downloaded from the Internet at www.asfg.mx/atschool/documents/ArtFestCatalogo2012.pdf.

Among the well-known local artists taking part in the event are Lewis Kant, Rocio Coffeen, Marlinde Von Ruhs and Toni Guerra.  A special homage this year will honor  Lucia Maya, one of the city’s most talented artists.

The Art Fest itself takes place on Saturday at on the grounds of American School (Colomos 2100) with 48 professional artists and 44 students exhibiting their work from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.

The atmosphere is festive, with  with music, food, children’s art workshops and exhibits of students’ artwork. All the work may be purchased and many of the artists are on hand to share their talent and expertise.

Cemetery tours

Those in search of a spooky activity to celebrate El Dia de Muertos may be interested in taking a graveyard tour at Guadalajara’s historic Belen cemetery.

Visitors can marvel at the gothic architecture and hear the tales of legend before entering the mysterious “tomb of the vampire.”

Daytime tours run Tuesday to Saturday at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m., at a cost of 20 pesos, while the more atmospheric evening tours run Thursday to Saturday at 8.30 p.m., 10 p.m. and 11.30 p.m. for 55 pesos.

The Osos de Guadalajara’s next game at home is against Soles de Mexicali on Saturday, November 3, 8 p.m.  at the Code Dome arena (Av. Prolongacion Alcalde 1360, two blocks La Normal).  On Saturday, there will be a new half-time cheerleader show and a VIP area for fans to enjoy, with prices remaining the same at 50 or 100 pesos.
