Tickets are 200 pesos (180 for members) and 90 for children in advance, or 220 for adults and 100 for children on the door. The American Society is at San Francisco 3332 in Colonia Chapalita.

AmCham’s new president

After two years as president of the Guadalajara chapter of the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham), Hardy Milsch stepped down at the 47th annual members meeting last weekend.

He will be replaced by Jose Zozayacorrea, who has 14 years of experience in AmCham, including six in the executive committee.

“The challenge is to increase membership, but also to create wealth in Jalisco,” Zozayacorrea said.

Milsch noted that 15 local companies joined the organization during his administration, bringing membership up to 354. The number of events organized also grew by 27 percent in the last two years, he said.

The alcoholic beverage sector was recognized for high export volume in the annual prize-giving ceremony, with Brown-Forman and Cerveceria Modelo lauded respectively in the U.S. and Mexican business categories.

Ice rinks

Downtown Guadalajara won’t be the only place in the metropolitan area this year to offer a popular winter pastime.

Zapopan Mayor Hector Robles announced this week that an ice rink and artificial snow machines will be installed in the municipality’s historic center (the massive Plaza de las Americas) from December 9 until January 6.

Guadalajara city hall will again be opening a rink in the Plaza de la Liberacion, although the full details were not available at press time. Last year the rink remained open through January 16.

Tlaquepaque will also boast its own ice rink for residents and visitors to enjoy this winter, Mayor Alfredo Barba Mariscal confirmed last week. The rink will be located in the Jardin Hidalgo in central Tlaquepaque from December 15 until the first week of January.

Zapopan’s covered 600-square-meter ice rink has space for 250 skaters at a time, while the 1,200-square-meter snow corridor will receive a fresh layer of artificial snowflakes for seven minutes every half hour.

Both Zapopan and Tlaquepaque’s rinks will be open to the public daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. (10 p.m. at weekends). Admission is free.

Vertical race

Guadalajara will host a highly unusual sport this weekend, with its first ever Vertical Race taking place in the Hotel Riu (Lopez Mateos and Niños Heroes ) on Sunday,  December 9, 8 a.m. Four hundred participants will race two-by-two up the 41 floors and 900 flights of stairs – commencing every 30 seconds – with electronic chips in their shoes to record who sets the quickest time. The fastest three athletes will receive free Nike shoes and clothing, gym memberships and a courtesy stay at the hotel.
