Massive Rosca

All are invited to the Plaza Guadalajara for free hot chocolate and a slice of a huge Rosca de Reyes cake on Three King’s Day, Sunday, January 6, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Rosca de Reyes is a sweet, ring-shaped bread adorned with dried fruit traditionally eaten on El Dia de Reyes in commemoration of the three wise men who travelled to Bethlehem to visit baby Jesus.

The cake has a plastic baby Jesus figurine hidden inside, with Mexican tradition dictating that the person who finds the figurine is obliged to provide tamales and atole for friends or family on February 2, El Dia de la Candelaria.

“We’re going to have a present for whoever finds the figurine,” promised Ramon Godinez Ortiz, Guadalajara’s director of tourism. The Plaza Guadalajara is situated downtown, in front of the Palacio Municipal on Avenida 16 de Septiembre.

In the second tier, Guadalajara is represented by Leones Negroes of the public University of Guadalajara (UdeG) and Estudiantes Tecos, long affiliated with the private Autonomous University of Guadalajara (AUG) but recently bought out by Carlos Slim’s Grupo Pachuca.
