Opera in Strange Places

Have a coffee in front of Teatro Degollado some afternoon and your waitress might just burst in to song.  In order to promote the live performances broadcast from the Met in New York to Teatro Diana, that theater and the Discover the Centro Historico commission are showcasing opera singers in the most unlikely of places. Friday, March 13, subway travelers in the Plaza Universidad station were surprised and pleased to hear a soprano and tenor give a brief opera recital in their midst. So far opera singers have visited the Plaza de la Liberacion, the municipal palace, and three malls (Galerias, Gran Plaza and Andares). Art Intervention

The Culture Department at Guadalajara City Hall is promoting an art intervention program that brings meaningful words to barren and unsightly public spaces.  Municipal officials approach owners of walls and disused buildings and ask them to lend their spaces to young people, who can either paint their own words, or quotes or texts by well-known scribes.  The Acción Poética movement was started by poet Armando Alanis in Monterrey 15 years ago and has spread throughout Latin America.
