Reforestation campaign starts Sunday

Want to help restore the local environment?

The Chapala government’s Institute of Youth will be giving away 7,000 tree saplings at the kickoff of the municipal reforestation set for Sunday, May 19.

The event will take place at the Salate de Felisa, the legacy tree standing on the Malecón in front of the Beer Garden restaurant. Residents will be asked to plant the giveaway trees in their home properties and neighborhoods, and diligently care for them before and after the summer rainy season. Assorted species up for grabs include ceibas, guamúchiles, parotas, contales, candelillos, plumerías, huajes and ficus.

In another angle of the reforestation project, people can assist in hand-crafting seed bombs, rounded clumps of earth and compost that will be shot from the air over mountain terrains that have been devastated by recent forest fires. Contributions of recycled egg cartons are needed to store the seed bombs until they are ready to be released once the rainy season takes hold.
