Flower festival  on Av Chapultepec

The yearly Festival de las Flores is on display on Avenida Chapultepec through this weekend. 

Some 800 million pesos of flowers are sold in Jalisco each year and 4,675 employees working at 64 companies are dedicated to the production of flowers in the state.

Bike school for kids

Guadalajara municipal government has launched a bicycle school where children can learn to cycle on the car-free Via RecreActiva. “The idea is to teach children from a young age, so that when they are in the streets they are safer,” said project leader Abaraham Herrera. The school operates on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 12:30  p.m. and currently attracts 45 to 60 children. 

Book club meets

The next book club meeting at the American Society of Jalisco is Thursday, May 19, 10 a.m. and the book to be reviewed is keyed to modern history buffs: “The Battle for Spain: The Spanish Civil War 1936-1939,” by Anthony Beevor (2006), available on Kindle. With new material gleaned from the Russian archives, Spain’s #1 bestseller provides a balanced and penetrating perspective on one of the most bitter and hard-fought wars of the twentieth century.

Boutique hotel in barrio Mexicaltzingo

Guadalajara has a luxurious new boutique hotel to add to its accommodation options for tourists. The Hotel Gran Casa Xalisco is located in the Mexicaltzingo neighborhood in Guadalajara and cost 8 million pesos (US$460,000) to build. The building has 10 rooms, with an architectural style that is typical of late nineteenth century Guadalajara.
