Pozole, piñatas at Christmas bash

Three-hundred-and-fifty plates of hominy and meat stew (pozole) were served at the gigantic Christmas posada thrown by Los Niños de Chapala y Ajijic (NCA) on December 10.

Invited guests were kids, parents, families and sponsors of the scholarship program that helps more than 200 children with their education.

The event was funded by special donations from sponsors. The food, presents and bags of food were prepared by the families in the program.

The posada started with Joseph and Mary seeking rest in the inn (posada) along the street next to the NCA office and ending at the office door. The people inside answered the chant of “posada,” and as the song went on, Mary and Joseph met with Baby Jesus (a real nine-month old baby) inside the property.

The eight piñatas were attacked by children (young, old and grown-ups) and everyone dived in to grab the goodies that fell out when the pot was broken.

While the piñatas were getting thumped, those in the kitchen were finishing up the pozole. Not a drop was left over at the end of the posada.

The festivities ended with a gift of a Christmas “sock” (stocking) for each of the NCA students and a bag with fruits and vegetables for the families.

A great time was had by all. NCA extends a big thank you to Coca-Cola, suppliers of 250 chairs (more than half at no charge) and the sponsors, who helped to make all of it possible with their generous donations.
