The last two years have been “hard times” for Israel and Alma. They were childhood sweethearts who married at 16 years old. All went well for some time and they had two children. Life was good until Israel couldn’t find any work in his construction profession. The couple lost everything except a cell phone that they couldn’t use, two beds and the clothing on their backs—and they had two more children.
Israel built a lean-to tent on a relative’s property that had room for only the beds inside. There was no running water or bathroom. Israel and Alma took their four children to the Tepehua Community Center each Friday. The despair of this young family had nearly destroyed them.
A few weeks ago, a Mexican angel named Ana appeared and she promised to pay the rent on a little brick house if one could be found before the rainy season set in. The wonderful offer was presented to the Tepehua Community Center; those in charge there to be the custodians of the quest. The miracle happened! A brick house with two rooms, a kitchen and a bath within the price range the angel had offered to pay was found within a couple of days – well before the rains came.
This week, the little family is moving out of the stench of the tent that was beside an illegal dumping site and into what is to them a real home. “Seguridad,” was all Israel could say when he touched the solid wall of the brick house. Alma just whispered “Gracias.”
Alma and Israel will work as volunteers at the Tepehua Center in exchange for this heavenly gift. Alma will work in the kitchen a few hours a week and Israel will work as the maintenance man for eight hours a week.
