School for Deaf seeking new volunteers

The Board of Directors of the Lakeside School for the Deaf is on the prowl for lots of new volunteers.

They are looking especially for those who would like to help organize the fund-raising home tours and/or sharpen their retail experience working in the Casi Nuevo Thrift Shop, of which the School for the Deaf shares with Have Hammers…Will Travel and the Lake Chapala Society Education Program.

Many folks are unaware that The School for the Deaf and Children with Special Needs helps not only the hearing impaired, but also helps other kids who have various challenges in their lives. The School, with a student population of about 110, aids children with Downs Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Quadriplegia, Paraplegia and visual impairment. The outreach program extends to more than 35 hearing impaired children attending other schools in the area as well as 45 adults at Lakeside.

The school operates mostly with money garnered from fund-raising events such as the “Behind the Walls’ Home tours that are held on the last Thursday of the month  from November to March, the sale of photographer Alison Pickering’s beautiful books, “Behind the Walls” and “Beyond the Walls” that exhibit some of the most beautiful of Lakeside homes. This past year a “Chefs Under the Stars” evening replaced the traditional Black and White Ball and was a dazzling success. A coming event will include a fashion show produced by Cece Girling, who has produced five fashion spectaculars for Cruz Roja (Red Cross). This year the show produced for the School for the Deaf will offer a donation to Cruz Roja.

The decision to allow consignments at the Casi Nuevo Thrift Shop in Riberas del Pilar has been a good one. Customers and consignees are thrilled with the prompt, efficient and friendly service; but the extra business requires extra hands.

Whether you’d like to help with the home tours, other fund-raising events or in the Thrift Shop, the Board of Directors of the Lakeside School for the Deaf is ready and willing to see that you are trained for the position you’d most enjoy.

Contact Lisa McCary at 766-3502 or Cece Girling at 766-3964.
