BUddha on block for Ajijic park

Barbara’s Bazaar proprietor Tom Thompson is seeking community support to install a statue of Buddah in the public park adjacent to Ajijic’s waterfront Malecon.

The stunning eight-and-a-half foot tall stone figure was recently put on the market at an estate sale managed by the businessman. He says town administrator Hector España has given his okay for the project, but 30,000 pesos in funding is needed to purchase the object and cover costs of building a new base and moving it to the site.

In his pitch to recruit a dozen patrons willing to chip in at least 2,500 pesos each, Thompson notes, “Buddha represents non-violence, peace and unconditional love.  Couldn’t we use a symbol like that in our area?” The deal must be arranged no later than Tuesday, April 9. Otherwise the serene praying Buddha will go to a back-up buyer who plans to mount it on private property.
