Ajijic offer free fetes for moms

Mother’s Day festivities in Ajijic will be extended beyond Mexico’s customary May 10 holiday date, with two special events spanning this weekend.

Festejo Cultural del Día de las Madres, on Saturday, May 11, 8 p.m. at the Malecon amphitheater, will feature a program of music and dance staged by Collage. The group’s forte is in the genres of jazz, flamenco and French song. The event is jointly sponsored by the cultural collectives LagoGris, El Tachihual, El Faro and restaurant El Jardin de Ninette.

The town’s traditional Mother’s Day bash at the local Lienzo Charro bullring is scheduled for Sunday, May 12, 4 p.m. The celebration normally draws a huge crowd of local families to watch moms engage in light-hearted games such as mechanical bull-riding, foot races, tug-o-war and a variation on bull-fighting that involves cornering a calf to retrieve a cash prize tied to its horns.  All sorts of gifts will be handed out to mothers in a series of raffles. For extra chuckles, town administrator Hector España has lined up a group of local men to put on a spoof strip show entitled Solo para Desesperadas (for the desperate only).

Both events are open to one and all free of charge.
