International Garden gains new sculpture

A handsome alabaster bas-relief sculpture depicting a Greco-Roman chariot is the second acquisition chosen to grace Ajijic’s International Garden, set at the far west end of the waterfront Malecon.

The purchase and installation of the new art work was arranged by the garden’s appointed master-planners Ricardo Quiarte and Tom Thompson. The stone and craftsmanship appears to be of Italian origin. The piece is dedicated to the memory of long-time lakeside residents  Virginia Downs Miller and Ines Freedan.

Thompson is now working in cooperation with the Lakeside Garden Guild to relocate La Japonesa, an old fishing launch turned into a planter dedicated to Juanita Reed, that has been sitting in storage since it was removed from Chapala’s waterfront park.

He is also looking for sponsors to order dedicatory plaques for the new park adornments, as well as one in memory of the late Joan Frost to be added to the stone fountain honoring distinguished women that sits at the other end of the Malecon. He also welcomes any ideas or contributions for further development of the green area exemplifying the town’s cross-cultural make-up. Interested persons may contact him at Barbara’s Bazaar, Independencia 7, phone 766-1824, or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
