Lakesiders honor fallen vets

In commemoration of the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice ended bloody hostilities of World War I, residents of the Lake Chapala area paused this week for solemn ceremonies honoring veterans of the armed services.

The 904 Wing of the Canadian Air Force Association and the Royal Canadian Legion Lake Chapala Branch jointly hosted a Remembrance Day service in San Antonio Tlayacapan, while American Legion Post 7 held a simultaneous Veterans Day program in Chapala.  Both events were followed by social gatherings where those in attendance sported the traditional red poppies symbolizing a tribute to fallen heroes.

Dan Williams, John Gurin, Roy Lahti and John Haffner took charge of preparing a 100-kilo pig for the Post 7 feast.

Royal Canadian Legion officer Sam Corbeil recited “In Flanders Fields.”

Bagpiper Keith Crockatt played haunting tunes at the Remembrance Day service.

Former lakesider Jeanie Adkins flew in from Kansas with husband Leon Peine to attend the Chapala Veterans Day commemoration.
