Las Calaveras holds open house

Animal lovers will have a rare opportunity to get an inside look at the Las Calaveras, lakeside’s unique animal rescue, rehabilitation center and sanctuary, at the second annual open house benefit to be held Saturday, December 7, 4 p.m., hosted by owner-operator Siegrid Hernandez and her husband, local vet Pepe Magaña.

Visitors will be able to tour the down-home facility where dozens of injured and abandoned wild birds, reptiles, farm beasts and domestic animals enjoy safe haven. New inhabitants include two young herons that were taken in after falling from their nest as baby chicks and a vulture that suffered a broken wing after getting snagged in an electrical wire.

Magaña will show off his talents as an amateur chef, preparing a menu of authentic Mexican cuisine for guests. There will also be cash bar and a bazaar area to pick up second-hand households goods and Hernandez’s original animal-themed handicrafts.

The donation for admission is 200 pesos per person, meal included. For advance tickets and reservations call Hernandez at cel. 331-153-0116 or stop by Dr. Pepe’s Clinic, Hidalgo 96-A, on the south side of the highway in Riberas del Pilar. Entrance may also be paid at the gate.

Las Calaveras is located on the Chapala-Mezcala highway about 1.5 kilometers east of the old railway station and the turn-off at Avenida Pepe Guizar. Look for a large sign posted at the entrance on the left side of the roadway will help guide the way.
