‘Church in a Box’ hits the Mazamitla road

Christ Church Lakeside will join La Sagrada Familia (The Holy Family) Mission in Mazamitla on Sunday, March 30, for a combined celebratory “Church in a Box” service and the now traditional “Moveable Feast” of fried chicken and accompanying side dishes provided by the lakesiders.

After several years of driving with “Church in a Box” to Mazamitla to ensure that the small congregation there could participate in communion, La Sagrada Familia has a priest. Canon Habacuc Ramos Huerta has returned to this diocese after serving as secretary of the Anglican Church of Mexico in the Mexico City Provincial Office.

The concept of Church-in-a-Box began when the members of Christ Church were seated with representatives of Mazamitla’s organized mission during the Anglican Church’s 2012 Synod of the Diocese of Western Mexico. The lakeside representatives learned that the mission’s visiting priest was in the hospital and the congregation had not had a communion service for several months. Mazamitla representatives Faustino García Martínez and his wife. Guillermina Tejeda Gálvez, asked if the lakesiders would consider bringing church to the mountain village.

Rev. Danny Borkowski, vicar of Christ Church, previously served many years in a country where he carried Church-in-a-Box to small groups in a variety of locations. Learning of the dilemma of the Mazamitla mission, church members voted to periodically suspend their lakeside service to take the concept to La Sagrada Familia, along with a picnic lunch for the combined groups to share.

Those going from lakeside on March 30 will depart from Ajijic’s Farmacia Guadalajara at 9:15 a.m. with side dishes to share at the chicken picnic. Canon Habacuc will lead the noon service, which meets in the Martínez home. Following the worship service and the picnic, Christ Church members will return to lakeside.

Newcomers and visitors, as well as members of other churches, are welcome to join in this “Church-in-a-Box” and “Moveable Feast” experience but must email Kay Borkowski at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or phone (376) 766-2495 by Tuesday, March 25 , so that Christ Church can arrange vehicles – and enough fried chicken.
