Film classics to play for good causes

Cinemas del Lago is launching a special screening calendar to support altruistic causes in the lakeside area.

The Cine-ME project kicks off Tuesday, April 29 with the acclaimed film “Into the Wild,” playing at 12:30 and 9 p.m.  Admission is priced at 40 pesos per person, with half of the box office take set aside as a cash donation to Chapala’s Love in Action children’s home.

The biographical drama traces the true-life adventures of Christopher McCandless in his fatal quest to experience a meaningful life outside the boundaries of ordinary American society.  Sean Penn wrote and directed the film, basing his screenplay on the non-fiction book by Jon Krakauer.

Cinemas del Lago proprietor David Reynoso aims to continue the Cine-ME project on a permanent basis, with double screenings of selected movies running on alternate Tuesdays. Film titles for each occasion will be determined by a people’s choice voting system. Two weeks prior to each show date a listing of choices will be posted on Facebook pages pertaining to the cinema and Reynoso. The movie garnering the highest number of “like” hits will go on the next billboard.

All of the proposed feature-length movies will be classic or art films that delve into social issues and human values. Candidates for the first run included “Citizen Kane,” “Clockwork Orange,” “Forrest Gump” and “Pay It Forward.”

Love in Action will remain as the beneficiary for the initial Cine-Me programs. Other local non-profit groups working on behalf of the community’s disabled and underprivileged inhabitants will be named as future recipients.
