San Juan Cosala’s moringa project

The Moringa Madres is a new project in San Juan Cosala designed to provide work and additional income for local families who receive weekly food packages from Operation Feed.

Six hard-working women, all living in challenging situations, are responsible for caring for and harvesting the leaves from more than 80 moringa trees planted this year. Moringa is a recently recognized “super food” which provides a variety of nutritional needs.

A representative of Shared Trade, Fiona Prine from Nashville Tennessee, will visit San Juan Cosala next week. Shared Trade’s mission is “to build economic freedom in the lives of marginalized women around the world.” The Moringa Madres Project is one of 14 partner enterprises around the world that have been selected to participate in Shared Trade projects.

The local women recently sent packages of their moringa leaves to Nashville where they are becoming part of an international “tea kit” along with the tea leaves from three different countries and marketed and sold to help raise money to continue women’s projects.
