Chapala area gripped by festival fever

Lakesiders have multiple attractions to get them out and about these days, with three unique festivals scheduled on the tail end of March’s calendar.

The Festival del Lago, organized by the Jalisco branch of TV Azteca, is slated for Saturday, March 21 at the Vela Plaza, located at the west end of the Chapala Malecón. The event starts at noon, with the revered Virgin of Zapopan arriving amid fanfare for a celebration of Mass. Activities related to Lake Chapala conservation and appearances by big name musical entertainers and will keep things jumping for the rest of the day.  The program caps off with an after-dark fireworks display.

The Ajijic plaza is the venue for the Feria de la Capirotada, to be held Sunday, March 22, 4-6 p.m. It’s a perfect opportunity to sample different versions of the classic Lenten seasonal bread pudding prepared by local home cooks.

The Festival Gastronómico y Cultural del Charal is set to run March 27-29 at the Chapala Malecón. The three-day happening will put a spotlight on the tiny fish known as the area’s emblematic snack food and an expo showcasing merchandise produced by Jalisco craftsmen. The fair opens at 1 p.m. on Friday, and 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
