Birders report exciting sightings

Lakeside birders continued to search for and record species of birds in the area around Lake Chapala during April excursions to Cristiania Park, where members spotted the Tri-colored Heron, Black-backed Oriole, Forster’s Tern, Summer Tanager, Bushtit, Cooper’s Hawk and Eurasian Collared Dove and more, to total 50 species for the day.

Another 50 species of birds, including the Black-throated Magpie Jay, Eastern Meadowlark, Russet-crowned Motmot, Mexican Parrotlet, Northern Beardless Tyrannulet, Mountain Trogon and Rose-throated Becard, were seen further afield in the Rio Verde Park northeast of Guadalajara.

In May, trips were scheduled to the marshes near La Cristina and the Rosa Amarilla loop on the plateau above the south side of the lake to see higher altitude and pastureland birds such as Botteri’s Sparrow, Eastern Meadowlark and White-tailed Hawk.

The monthly bird walks are open to all who are interested, both beginner and experienced birders. Those who would like to join the fun can find upcoming dates and places on the website ChapalaBirders.org.
